Additional Information

Hotel: The Drury is 1 block from the train station and bus station, 20 min from the airport, 3 blocks from the riverfront, close to multiple restaurants, and 3 blocks from Pittsburgh’s historic Cultural District.

The Drury is the former Federal Reserve Bank Building, and the meeting rooms (located on the lower floor) are the original vaults. The hotel retains historic charm and architectural features.

Amenities:
  • Complimentary Hot Breakfast - Belgian waffles, scrambled eggs, sausage, fresh fruit, oatmeal, biscuits and gravy and more.
  • Complimentary Evening Drinks and Snacks - Join us from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. every evening to enjoy complimentary hot food, beer, wine, mixed drinks and soft drinks.
  • On-Site Facilities - Take advantage of the business center, fitness center or pool while away from home.

Tour and Dinner: Built in 1884 and a remnant of the legendary U.S. Steel Homestead Steel Works, the Carrie Blast Furnaces are a vestige of Pittsburgh’s 20th-century domination of the steel industry. During the two-hour guided tour, you’ll hear stories about the site’s technology (including why it is nationally significant) as well as get to know the culture of its workers. You’ll also learn a bit about the iron-making process, from the movement of the raw materials to the tapping of the furnaces that produced fiery molten iron. You’ll also learn how Rivers of Steel are preserving and maintaining the site by using Cor-Ten steel. You won’t want to miss this historical and informative tour that’s totally Pittsburgh!

What to Know Before You Go
As a former industrial site, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure an enjoyable visit.
  • What to wear: You will be outdoors the majority of the time; please dress for the weather. Additionally, the ground is uneven—sensible shoes are a must. Sneakers or boots are recommended.

  • Hard hats are required to be worn inside the plant. If you have a hard hat, please feel free to bring it. For those who need one, a hard hat will be provided and collected after the tour. Hats are disinfected between uses.

  • Restrooms & concessions: The rawness of the site is certainly part of its charm. However, that rawness also limits the creature comforts many of us are accustomed to, like running water. Portable bathrooms and wash stations are available at the Carrie Furnace site. Restrooms are available at the Pump House site.

  • Accessibility: Handicapped parking is available, but the grounds are not wheelchair accessible.

  • Liability: All visitors are required to sign a liability waiver and consent to be photographed (PDF). These will be available on-site the afternoon of the tour.

  • Site access: Site access will be limited to areas of the site deemed safe by Rivers of Steel.

  • A bus to the tour departs the hotel at 2:15pm. The tour of the Carrie Blast Furnace begins are 3:00pm. Dinner and drinks will be served at the Pump House, located across the river from the Carrie Blast Furnace, from 5:30 to 7:00pm. We will return to hotel at approximately 7:30pm.
